Here are some of our highlights:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Conferences and Events<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mozfest (March 2023): We talked about the challenges of virtual global organizing (like validation, engagement, communication, and coordination issues) and our strategies for building solidarity among Amazon Mechanical Turk workers (for example, virtual events, forums, communities, and social media campaigns).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/newsletter.turkopticon.net\/i\/RME4KP5GTlP4Kd055Wtbjg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FaccT (ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency) (June 2023)<\/a>: We presented our work about the multiple challenges (i.e.: unethical tasks) that data workers on Mechanical Turk are facing and what data workers hope for a future where they work in a fair and ethical environment.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/hcomp-crowddata\/workshop?authuser=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HCOMP (Human Computation and Crowdsourcing) (November 2023)<\/a>: We discussed the importance of ethical challenges of crowd work, including communication barriers between data requesters and workers, accuracy metrics for evaluating data quality, and annotation task design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Media and Outreach<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We were featured in several platforms and articles to amplify our message, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tech Workers Coalition: <a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.techworkerscoalition.org\/2023\/04\/04\/issue-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Issue 5: \u201cBeware the Hype: ChatGPT Didn&#8217;t Replace Human Data Annotators&#8221; (April 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Stanford Social Innovation Review:\u00a0<a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ssir.org\/articles\/entry\/ai-workers-mechanical-turk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Turk Wars: How AI Threatens the Workers Who Fuel It&#8221; (July 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Vice:\u00a0<a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/ak3dwk\/chatgpt-can-replace-the-underpaid-workers-who-train-ai-researchers-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;ChatGPT Can Replace the Underpaid Workers Who Train AI, Researchers Say&#8221; (August 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Computer Weekly:\u00a0<a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/366546273\/AI-interview-Krystal-Kauffman-lead-organiser-Turkopticon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;AI Interview: Krystal Kauffman, Lead Organiser Turkopticon&#8221; (September 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists:\u00a0<a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thebulletin.org\/premium\/2023-09\/popping-the-chatbot-hype-balloon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Popping the Chatbot Hype Balloon&#8221; (September 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Computer Weekly:\u00a0<a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/366553673\/US-lawmakers-write-to-AI-firms-about-gruelling-work-conditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;US Lawmakers Write to AI Firms About Gruelling Work Conditions&#8221; (November 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Podcasts<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">We appeared on the <a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/irlpodcast.org\/season7\/episode2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201dIRL by Mozilla: The Humans in the Machine (October 2023)\u201d<\/a>, discussing our <a class=\"mln-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coworker.org\/petitions\/end-the-harm-of-mass-rejections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mass Rejection petition<\/a> and how these unfair mass rejections affect real livelihoods. We are still actively working on this campaign.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<strong>Looking Ahead to 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">We have big things in store for the next year, as we&#8217;re eager to continue our fight to improve conditions for Amazon Mechanical Turk workers. We are excited to join efforts with new allies, volunteers, and collaborators.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our work in 2023 couldn\u2019t have been possible without the help of our supporters, and we hope to keep your continued support in 2024.
