Mass rejections remain a significant and frustrating issue for many workers in online platforms like Amazon Mechanical Turk. Have you ever experienced a situation at work where an issue spanned multiple departments? Unraveling the problem often hinges on effective communication. We don’t have that luxury as data workers.
In mid-September, a group of workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk found all the HIT (jobs) they had completed for a specific requester were rejected. We refer to this as a mass rejection. The aftermath of this incident varied widely among workers: some found that their HIT were reversed, others watched as their work simply vanished, and some were left with nothing changing in their accounts. The lack of clarity around the cause of these actions adds to the confusion and frustration. We cannot definitively say whether Amazon intervened (which seems unlikely), if the requester chose to reverse some HIT (which is probable), or if there was an attempt by the requester to delete an entire batch that inadvertently affected HIT already completed. The truth is, we simply do not know how these processes function on this particular platform.
Over the years, Turkopticon has operated with minimal communication from Amazon regarding such issues. It’s disheartening to recognize that simple adjustments to the platform could significantly enhance our experience as workers, yet we are denied meaningful discussions with Amazon about these improvements. This situation is incredibly frustrating, especially when workers’ livelihoods are impacted. At the very least, anyone facing a loss of income should know why.
If workers perform poorly or break the Terms of Service, they get suspended, and that makes sense. However, sometimes mass rejections from requesters can create the illusion of underperformance among workers who are actually delivering quality work. This shows the importance of allowing workers to advocate for themselves and be heard during such disputes. This is why we at Turkopticon are so passionate in our advocacy efforts; we genuinely want Amazon to listen and understand the detrimental effects of mass rejections.
For years, we’ve led a campaign dedicated to combating the injustice of mass rejections. It is essential for Amazon to acknowledge the harm inflicted by these mass rejections and take proactive steps to engage with workers’ concerns. Our advocacy extends beyond protecting individual workers; it’s about fostering an environment where the contributions of all workers are recognized and valued.
Despite our repeated attempts to engage, Amazon has shown minimal commitment to addressing the requests of both its workers and requesters. Many of the suggestions could significantly enhance the platform’s performance. By investing in improvements that serve both workers and requesters, Amazon has the potential to create a more streamlined environment—one that would ultimately lead to better outcomes for everyone. The apparent indifference toward these requests is puzzling and raises critical questions about the company’s priorities concerning the platform.
At Turkopticon, we will continue to advocate for workers and push Amazon for improvements. If you have not already, please consider adding your name to our petition.
